"I like how they treat us trainees. The colleagues really take the time to explain everything in an understandable way ."

Can you describe your role/position at Umicore?

I am currently a dual student at Umicore. I do my apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant and also study chemical technology at the H_da in Darmstadt. I started my training in September 2017 and have been studying since October 2018.

What do you like about your job?

That I can really work in the departments, even if there are only small jobs. But that gives me a good feeling. That I can support Umicore even if I am still in training. At the same time it motivates me to go on, even if it is sometimes not easy.

What do you like about working at Umicore?

I think it is nice that the employees treat each other very respectfully and friendly. I also like how they treat us trainees. The colleagues really take the time to explain everything to us in a good and understandable way and they really take care that we can work and support them during daily working routine. That gives us trainees a good feeling.

Why did you want to work at Umicore?

I did not specifically apply to Umicore. During an interview with our training partner Evonik, Umicore was introduced to us and we were asked if we could imagine working for Umicore later.

What do you look forward to when you set off to work in the morning?

I look forward to learning new things and improving my skills every day so that I can become a good employee later. I am also happy to expand my knowledge every day, e.g. to understand the theory of a new experiment or to be able to solve arithmetical problems better and faster.

What has been the highlight of your time at Umicore so far?

My highlight so far was when Umicore offered me the dual study program, I was really excited. Last year I was also able to design and plan the trainee event with another trainee and the training officer. I would also call that a highlight.

Any advice for newcomers?

Yes, I do. You should always give your best, no matter how difficult it is at that moment, e.g. due to learning or exam stress.
