Umicore supports the Eugen Kaiser School's upcycling project
On October 8, 2021, representatives from the materials technology and recycling group Umicore and the Eugen-Kaiser-Schule in Hanau gathered at the Wolfgang Industrial Park for a donation ceremony and the handover of trash bins. The waste separation project was launched as part of the company’s global Climate Action Program, which allows all employees to submit their ideas for reducing CO2 emissions. As early as mid-July, all unnecessary trash cans in the employee offices at the Hanau site were collected and replaced with central waste collection points. As a result, only paper trash cans remain in the office spaces. The general waste and recycling bins were placed in central common areas, such as the break rooms. This not only reduces the use of trash bags but also makes waste separation more sustainable.
To avoid carelessly discarding the 202 surplus trash cans, they were donated to the Eugen-Kaiser-Schule last Friday. They will now be repurposed for an upcycling project by the students. In addition, Umicore is supporting the school with a donation of €500 for the students’ field trip.
“We are a recycling company and an industry leader in sustainability. That is why we are all the more pleased that the collected trash cans are not simply disposed of, but are repurposed for an art project with the help of local students,” explained Dr. Bernhard Fuchs, CEO of Umicore AG & Co. KG. “We are also pleased that the students will have the opportunity to further their education through a study trip to the Bauhaus in Dessau, which we intend to support with a monetary donation.”

The collected trash cans are transformed into new objects through the reuse of materials and objects during classes at the Technical College of Design and the Vocational School for Color Technology and Interior Design.
