Umicore is funding new textbooks for Ukrainian children
Just in time for the new school year, Umicore, in collaboration with Ukraine-Hilfe Hanau, was able to provide 1,600 copies of Volumes 1 and 2 of the educational book series titled “The World Is Beautiful Because YOU Are Part of It!” for Ukrainian children. The books are intended to help Ukrainian children who come to Germany integrate more easily. They support the children in learning the language and bridge the gap with German-speaking children, as they can learn together and get to know each other better through these books.
“The first volume was so well received that we reordered another 600 copies. We’ve ordered an additional 1,000 copies of the second volume,” explains Uwe Niemeyer, head of the Ukraine Coordination Office, during a site visit with Dr. Bernhard Fuchs, CEO of Umicore AG & Co. KG, and Mayor Claus Kaminsky at the Kulturforum. “The books are distributed to arriving children, are available in the children’s book section of Forum Hanau and in daycare centers, and can be found at the ‘Orianka’ counseling center at the main train station and in the Red Cross donation hall,” he reports. Primary schools will soon be contacted to determine whether there is a need for them. If interested, teachers can order the book from the Ukraine Aid Coordination Office, according to Niemeyer.
“When we learned about the opportunity to support Ukrainian children and their families with this book donation, we immediately pulled out all the stops to make it happen. Social responsibility has always been a matter close to Umicore’s heart. The books may make it a little easier for the Ukrainian children in Hanau to settle into their new surroundings and maintain their connection to their homeland. If we were able to create even a momentary sense of a carefree childhood, we have achieved a great deal.”

Umicore donated 5,880 euros to Ukraine-Hilfe Hanau to help purchase 1,600 educational books.
Author Theresa Meixner had previously provided Ukraine-Hilfe with 650 copies of the 40-page book free of charge, as they were distributed, among other places, to children at the refugee shelter in the multipurpose hall in Hanau-Mittelbuchen. “All in all, a wonderful initiative,” said the mayor, thanking Dr. Fuchs from Umicore for the generous donation.
