A Trip Down Memory Lane at the Umicore Family Festival in Hanau

Regional website Germany
  • Umicore opens its factory gates to employees and their families—a total of 1,500 visitors tour the company.
  • The Family Day theme, “Yesterday Was This Morning,” takes visitors on a journey through time in the world of Umicore.
  • Hanau’s Mayor Claus Kaminsky is among the visitors: “With its innovative and resource-efficient products, as well as its reputation as an outstanding employer, Umicore is an important company for the Hanau region.”

Under the motto “Yesterday was this morning,” the materials technology and recycling group Umicore opened its doors last Saturday to all employees and their families. 1,500 visitors, surrounded by colleagues and their families, enjoyed a journey through time into the past and took a look at the present and future of the company.

Numerous attractions and information booths allowed visitors to trace Umicore’s history and learn more about topics such as working at Umicore, workplace safety, and the company’s products through the ages. Special highlights included guided tours of production and research facilities, as well as opportunities for direct comparison between the past and the present. Offices furnished in different styles, which visitors could walk through, brought the working environments of the past and present to life, for example, and an interactive booth on workplace safety illustrated the evolution of safety awareness and equipment.

There was also plenty for the younger guests to discover that day—in addition to a colorful children’s program, they were able to conduct experiments on the topics of air and water in an environmental laboratory under the guidance of the Hanau Environmental Center. The great curiosity and active participation of the young researchers delighted not only the staff of the Environmental Center but also the parents.

Dr. Bernhard Fuchs, CEO Umicore AG &Co. KG,  was pleased with the high turnout and the employees’ interest in giving their family members a closer look at their workplace: “Our colleagues spend a large part of their lives at the company and make enormously important contributions to the company’s success through their work. So it’s wonderful when they can show their families what their workplace looks like and what products are actually manufactured there. I am very pleased to see the pride with which our colleagues explain their work to their families."

Mayor Claus Kaminsky also accepted Umicore’s invitation to the family festival. During a tour of the company grounds, he gained new insights: “It never ceases to impress me what innovative topics the materials technology companies in Hanau are working on. With its products that help conserve valuable resources, Umicore is an important partner in this network and has received numerous awards, particularly as an outstanding employer. Events like today’s are a sign that a trusting and open approach to one another is a living corporate culture."
