Umicore is once again supporting the city run and women’s shelters with a donation of 10,000 euros

This year’s charity event will take place on September 18 in various locations

With a generous donation of 10,000 euros, Umicore AG & Co. KG is once again supporting the Hanau City Run, which has been sending a clear message since 2001 under the motto “Show strength—together against violence against women.” This marks the tenth time the materials technology and recycling group has been among the key sponsors of the charity event, whose proceeds go to the two women’s shelters in Hanau and Wächtersbach and which will take place in a modified format this year—due to COVID-19 and hygiene regulations.

“We are very pleased that the city of Hanau has found a way to hold this year’s city run despite all the challenges,” says Dr. Bernhard Fuchs, CEO of Umicore AG & Co. KG. “Providing safety in uncertain times is more important than ever for women and children who experience violence and seek protection. That is why we have been a sponsor of this charity run for many years and hope that many colleagues will join in again this year to take a stand against violence against women.”

Due to COVID-19, the 19th Hanau City Run will take place in a decentralized format this year. This means that runners will not follow a predetermined route but will run their own route—alone, in pairs, or in small groups—and determine their own course individually. “Anyone who would like to participate in the City Run this year can register through us as usual. After paying the entry fee, they will receive a bib number via email and can use this number to run or walk on a route of their choice on Friday, September 18, at 5 p.m.," explains Hanau’s Women’s Affairs Officer Monika Kühn-Bousonville from the organizing team. The focus is not primarily on the distance or the time. What matters is making a visible statement against violence against women by participating in the city run, while adhering to the specified hygiene and social distancing guidelines. “Participants can send us a photo or a short video clip of their run, which we’d be happy to publish on the city’s website if they wish,” reports the Women’s Affairs Officer.

Mayor Claus Kaminsky and the First Deputy District Administrator of the Main-Kinzig District, Susanne Simmler, expressed their gratitude—on behalf of everyone involved in the charity run—for the reliable partnership that has existed for years. “With its donation, Umicore is one of the cornerstones of the event. We are fortunate to be able to rely on such supporters when it comes to important social projects and institutions,” Simmler and the mayor agree. The city run is a great opportunity for all participants—including a growing number of companies, clubs, and gyms that field their own running groups—to strengthen the community. “But far more important is the clear political statement against violence against women and the financial support for women’s shelters,” says Kaminsky. These shelters for victims of domestic violence, despite their extremely valuable work for society, still rely on donations, which make up a large part of their budget, adds Simmler. “Every euro counts here, and especially this year—when the city run cannot take place in its usual form and there is therefore concern that fewer people will participate—a sponsor like Umicore is an indispensable source of support,” confirm Simmler and Kaminsky.
