During a formal certificate presentation ceremony, Federal Minister for Family Affairs Dr. Franziska Giffey presented the “berufundfamilie” certificate to the materials technology and recycling group Umicore. The company received the award for the fifth consecutive year and has been certified since 2007.

One of Umicore’s key priorities during the past reporting period was the implementation of a “Female Leadership Program,” a modular continuing education program tailored to the specific needs and starting points of women in leadership positions. The company has set a goal of increasing the proportion of women in senior management to 15%.

For the next three years, the focus will be on an aging workforce and the topic of eldercare. Delayed retirement, for example, requires the creation of age-appropriate workplaces. A survey of the specific target group will be conducted to identify their wishes and needs, which will then be translated into targeted measures. In addition, the company’s existing support programs for balancing caregiving and work will be further developed.

“For Umicore, these areas of responsibility are a matter of course and also of great importance,” says Carsten Neumann, Head of Human Resources. "These issues are of great significance for current employees and also in the search for future talent, and they often represent a key factor in choosing Umicore as an employer. Work-life balance is not limited to childcare options; it must be viewed comprehensively."

About the berufundfamilie Certification Process

The award is granted by berufundfamilie Service GmbH, which assesses the requirements for (re)certification through a rigorous certification process. Companies that have already been recertified multiple times, including Umicore, undergo a streamlined dialogue process. In this process, organizations focus on the potential for optimization in specific selected areas of their work-life balance policy. The certificate issued following a successful dialogue process is permanent; to ensure quality, it must be confirmed every three years through a renewed dialogue process.
