We move people – Marcel Martini by interview

With his idea, Marcel is helping to reduce Umicores CO₂ footprint.

"For me, working at Umicore means being able to do an always-changing and challenging job with a top employer close to my home."

Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy. Therefore, we are constantly looking for new and innovative approaches to help us make Umicore’s business activities and sites more climate-friendly. For this reason, the Climate Action Program was launched, to which colleagues can submit their ideas for reducing CO₂ emissions. What motivated you to take part in the program?

„I think the Climate Action Program is great because all employees of Umicore at the Hanau site can participate and submit their ideas for saving CO₂. This allows Umicore to draw on a large amount of ideas and creativity on the topic.

Why am I taking part in the program? I think it is good that the topic of sustainability is given a higher priority and promoted at Umicore. I am happy that I can make a contribution with my idea to sustainably cover the energy demand at the site."

Around 80 projects have already been submitted and many have already been implemented or are in the process of being implemented. Tell us about your idea!

„When I heard about the Climate Action Program, the first thing I thought of was: We have so many big buildings at the site and not one photovoltaic system installed that directly supplies green electricity. I wanted to change that. As part of the program, we then set up a pilot project and installed photovoltaic systems with a nominal capacity of 450 kWp, which will allow us to save around 100 tons of CO₂ per year. This is just a start, but I hope more projects will follow in this direction."

Umicore has been at the Hanau site for 20 years and you have been part of the team for half of this time. Which impression did you had of Umicore at the beginning when you first applied for a job and has this impression changed?

„When I applied back then, I would not have associated Umicore and sustainability at all. That has changed completely in the last few years. Today I see Umicore as a key player in the sustainable electrification of tomorrow and sustainability is now at the heart of the company's philosophy."
