About New Business Incubator

In NBI we develop long-term business opportunities for the business units, as well as business opportunities with a different business model that may develop into a stand-alone business, called incubators.

What you will be doing

You will be responsible for the collection, analysis, consolidation and reporting of technological information for the different application segments of Umicore.
You will maintain existing tools (models, technological benchmarking) and have the IT skills to develop novel tools to support Umicore strategic decisions.
You will report to the Strategic Insights and Analytics (SIA) Manager.

You will be located on the Hanau (DE) site of Umicore.

 

Detailed Responsibilities :

  • Based on patents, scientific literature and an interaction with an international network of colleagues and industry players, you identify technologies and  technology trends relevant to the various Umicore activities. This includes all the materials and processes involved in the market. You build a technical understanding of the technologies present in the competitive landscapeand you can assess these technologies according to relevant metrics (eg TRL’s).

  • You monitor key players technology moves in the value chain with deep focus on peers and competitors’ technology strategy (following literature, patents, public announcements….). You  are in charge of technology benchmarking for processes and products, coordinating the efforts of R&D testing centre and other Umicore departments. You monitor technical progress and breakthroughs and make a critical technical assessment of the value of these disruptive technologies. You are in charge of identifying key players developing these technologies and their interactions.
  • Thanks to your strong IT abilities (Coding, visualisation, development, modelisation…), you maintain and develop specific tools to enhance technological understanding of Umicore materials application and markets. These tools, developed with the support of Umicore colleagues (from the digitalization and data analytics teams, should offer a sustainable way to determine Umicore material and process value assessment.

  • You summarize and report your findings on a regular basis for use by management in defining innovation roadmap and global technology strategy. You attend conferences and fairs, interact with external technology analysts to gain knowledge and get insights on technology evolutions in the markets of interest for Umicore.

Who we are looking for

  • You have a master’s degree in chemistry, Physics, Material Sciences, Engineering, or similar.  A PhD is a plus but is not required.
  • A 1 or 2 years’ experience in consulting or in a similar position is a plus.
  • You are keen to continuously learn about emerging technologies and their real-world applications.
  • You are excellent at finding, compiling and analysing new technical information.
  • You are a data cruncher, computer literate with excellent knowledge of Microsoft (and associated) tools.
  • You are multilingual (English and Dutch) and minimum one out of other languages like French, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese.
  • You are a critical thinker and are able to work in a team as well as independently.
  • You are willing to travel abroad.
